Virtual Couples Therapist in Toronto: Stop the Same Fight

Relationships can get complicated.

Sometimes it is the same argument happening over and over again. Sometimes you have stopped arguing altogether and the distance between you feels harder to ignore. You may love each other deeply and still struggle to understand each other. Or you may find yourselves reacting in ways that neither of you intended, wondering how a conversation that started so small became so painful.

Couples therapy can give you a place to slow those moments down and understand what is actually happening between you.

I am Aseel Al-Saheb, a Registered Psychotherapist and couples therapist in Toronto. At Unravel Therapy, I offer virtual couples therapy across Ontario in English, Arabic, or a combination of both, depending on what feels most natural for you and your partner.

My role is not to decide who is right.

It is to help you understand the relationship you have created together, the patterns keeping you stuck, and what each of you may be trying to communicate underneath the anger, defensiveness, silence, or distance.

Couples Therapy Is Not Just for Relationships in Crisis

You do not have to wait until you are considering separation to come to couples therapy.

Some couples come because they are having the same fight repeatedly and cannot seem to resolve it. Others are struggling after a betrayal or loss of trust. Some feel more like roommates than partners. Others are preparing for marriage or navigating a major transition and want to strengthen their relationship before problems become more difficult to untangle.

Couples therapy may be helpful when you are experiencing:

  • Repeated arguments or unresolved conflict
  • Difficulty communicating or feeling understood
  • Emotional distance or disconnection
  • Trust issues or betrayal
  • Changes in intimacy
  • Differences in needs, expectations, or priorities
  • Premarital concerns
  • Parenting disagreements
  • In-law or extended family boundaries
  • Cultural or religious differences
  • Major life transitions
  • Immigration or migration related stress
  • Different approaches to money, family, or responsibilities
  • A pursue-and-withdraw dynamic where one partner seeks connection while the other pulls away
  • Uncertainty about the future of the relationship

And sometimes there is no single major problem.

You simply know that something between you does not feel the way it used to.

Who Couples Therapy Is For

I work with couples who feel stuck in the same conflict, couples who have grown distant, and couples who want to strengthen things before problems deepen. That includes:

  • couples from two cultures, faiths, or first languages
  • couples navigating family expectations
  • partners with busy or mismatched schedules
  • couples where one partner is unsure about therapy

The Argument Is Often Only Part of the Story

One thing I pay close attention to in couples therapy is the pattern underneath the problem.

A disagreement may appear to be about chores, money, parenting, intimacy, phones, or whose family you are visiting this weekend.

But the emotional experience underneath that disagreement can be very different.

  • One partner may be thinking, “Do I matter to you?”
  • The other may be thinking, “Nothing I do is ever enough.”

One may become louder because they desperately want to feel heard. The other may shut down because the intensity feels overwhelming.

  • Then the more one pushes, the more the other withdraws.
  • The more one withdraws, the more abandoned the other feels.

Before long, both people are reacting to each other’s reactions rather than talking about what they originally needed.

That is why I don’t approach couples therapy like a courtroom.

If our work becomes focused entirely on proving whose version of events is correct, we can miss something much more important: what keeps happening between you and why.

The goal is not for one partner to win the session.

The goal is for both of you to understand the cycle well enough to begin changing it together.

What Couples Therapy With Me Looks Like

I am active in the therapy room. I will listen carefully, but I am not going to sit silently while the two of you have the same argument you have been having at home.

When I notice a pattern unfolding between you, I may slow the conversation down. I may ask what happened internally just before one of you became angry or withdrew. I may help you say something differently, or help your partner hear what may be underneath what was said.

At times, I may challenge you. At other times, what is needed is space to understand an experience that has not felt understood before.

While every couple and every course of therapy is different, the beginning of our work often reflects the way I think about therapy at Unravel: Explore. Untangle. Resolve.

Session 1: Explore

We start by understanding what brings you here.

Both of you have space to share what has been happening from your perspective, what feels difficult right now, and what you hope will be different.

I also begin paying attention to what happens between you as we talk. Sometimes how a couple tells me about an argument gives us just as much information as the argument itself.

Session 2: Untangle

We begin looking beneath the conflict.

What tends to happen when one of you feels hurt, criticized, rejected, or misunderstood? What does the other person do in response? And what happens next?

We may explore relevant relationship history, attachment experiences, family or cultural influences, and significant experiences that have shaped the relationship.

The goal is to begin seeing the pattern clearly enough that your partner is no longer the entire problem. The pattern becomes something we can look at together.

Session 3 and Beyond: Resolve

Once we have a clearer understanding of what is happening between you, we begin working toward change.

Depending on your relationship and goals, that may mean communicating differently, expressing needs more clearly, changing how conflict unfolds, repairing trust, strengthening emotional connection, or learning how to respond differently when the familiar cycle begins.

Resolve does not mean never disagreeing again. It means developing different ways of moving through difficult moments without repeatedly losing each other in the process.

My Approach to Couples Therapy

My work is integrative and grounded in evidence-based approaches. I draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to understand the emotional cycle between partners, and on the Gottman Method for practical tools around conflict, repair, and friendship.

Attachment and systemic perspectives help us see how each partner’s history and family shape what happens between you. I choose what fits your relationship rather than applying one model to every couple.

Virtual Couples Therapy in English and Arabic

Language matters in therapy.

There are things we can technically translate but still not quite capture. A phrase in Arabic can carry an emotional meaning that feels different when explained in English. A family expectation may make perfect sense within one cultural context and seem confusing in another. Couples may also have different first languages, different cultural backgrounds, different relationships with religion, or different expectations about marriage and family.

I provide couples therapy in English and Arabic, and couples do not necessarily have to choose one language for the entire session.

But culturally responsive therapy is about more than speaking the same language. Culture may influence how we understand relationships, family involvement, parenting, religion, independence, responsibility, boundaries, and expectations of one another.

These experiences deserve room in therapy without automatically being treated as the problem.

Couples therapy at Unravel Therapy is not limited to one type of couple. I work with couples from different cultural, religious, and family backgrounds, and at different stages of their relationship. Each relationship brings its own experiences, values, challenges, and dynamics into the therapy room. My role is to understand the couple in front of me, without assumptions about what their relationship should look like.

Virtual Couples Therapy in Toronto and Across Ontario

Couples therapy already requires coordinating two people’s schedules. Therapy should not make that harder than it needs to be.

Unravel Therapy is a virtual psychotherapy practice, which means couples in Toronto can attend sessions without commuting across the city, finding parking, or adding travel time to an already busy day.

Virtual couples therapy can also be useful when partners are temporarily in different locations within Ontario. You do not necessarily need to be sitting on the same couch to participate in the session.

For couples in Toronto, this means therapy is accessible from downtown Toronto, North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, East York and other Toronto neighbourhoods, as well as Mississauga and communities throughout Ontario.

What matters most is having a private space where each partner can participate openly and safely.

Working With One Consistent Couples Therapist

At Unravel Therapy, you are not being matched to a rotating team.

When you book a consultation with me and we decide to work together, I am your therapist.

I get to know your history, your patterns, the moments that have been difficult and the progress that may not always be obvious from one week to the next.

That continuity matters to me.

Couples therapy asks both partners to talk about parts of their relationship that may feel vulnerable, painful, embarrassing, or difficult to explain. I want the therapeutic relationship itself to feel consistent enough that we can do that work together.

How Long Does Couples Therapy Take?

There is no honest answer that applies to every couple.

The length of couples therapy depends on what brings you in, how long the pattern has been present, whether there has been a significant rupture such as betrayal, what each partner hopes to change, and what happens between sessions.

Some couples come with a specific concern and need a shorter period of focused work. Others are trying to change patterns that have developed over many years.

I would rather talk with you about your relationship and your goals than give you a predetermined number of sessions before we have even met.

We can also revisit your progress as therapy continues so that couples therapy does not become something you attend indefinitely without knowing what you are working toward.

Couples Therapy Fees and Insurance

Couples therapy sessions at Unravel Therapy are 60 minutes and $210 per session.

Services are provided by a Registered Psychotherapist. Many extended health insurance plans in Ontario include coverage for psychotherapy or services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist, although coverage varies by plan.

You will receive a receipt that can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement when your plan includes this coverage.

If you are unsure, check your benefits for coverage for a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and confirm the amount available to you.

Meet Aseel Al Saheb, Registered Psychotherapist

I am the founder of Unravel Therapy and a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).

Couples work is one of the parts of psychotherapy I am most drawn to.

There is something powerful about having both people in the room and being able to see a dynamic happening in real time rather than only hearing about it afterward.

I am curious about the why behind behaviour.

  • Why did that comment land so painfully?
  • Why does one person need to resolve the argument immediately while the other needs space?
  • Why does asking for reassurance somehow turn into criticism?
  • Why do two people who care about each other keep finding themselves on opposite sides?

Those questions are not about assigning blame.

They help us understand what has become tangled so we can begin doing something different with it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Therapy in Toronto

No. Couples therapy is not limited to married couples. Partners may seek relationship therapy at different stages of commitment, including before marriage.

That is common. Both partners do not need to arrive equally enthusiastic about therapy. We can talk openly about what each of you wants, what you are concerned about, and what would make therapy feel useful rather than forced.

You can start on your own. Individual sessions can help you understand your part of the pattern and decide next steps. Many hesitant partners join later.
